Sleep Disordered Breathing & Airway Treatment

If you suffer from sleep apnea, our experienced dentist can provide treatments to widen your airway and help you breathe easier while asleep. We are committed to improving your overall health and helping you achieve a healthier quality of life.

What is Sleep Disordered Breathing?

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a variety of sleep-related conditions, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, that are characterized by pauses, interruptions or difficulty in breathing while you sleep. There are a number of factors that can cause sleep disordered breathing, and these vary depending on your specific diagnosis. Obstructive sleep apnea, in particular, can be caused by your tongue rolling back into your airway as you sleep or the soft tissues of your throat collapsing, blocking the airway and keeping you from breathing properly.

Though sleep apnea and other sleep disorders can only be diagnosed by a professional sleep physician, there are many common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea that can help you recognize the disorder in yourself or someone you love before seeking diagnosis.

Symptoms in Adults

  • Snoring
  • Fatigue
  • Restless sleep
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Frequent dry or sore throat when you wake up
  • Irritability or personality shifts
  • Extreme drowsiness during the day

Symptoms in Children

  • Snoring
  • Restless sleep
  • Snorting, coughing or choking while asleep
  • Mouth breathing
  • Nighttime sweating
  • Irritability or ADHD symptoms
  • Bed wetting
  • Sleep terrors

If you feel you may be suffering from sleep disordered breathing, we recommend you speak to your physician and our dentist, so you can find a solution that is right for you.

Sleep Disordered Breathing and Overall Health

Sleep disordered breathing significantly impacts your overall health. Because sleep health impacts the development and management of a number of chronic diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has named undiagnosed sleep disorders as a contributor to serious medical problems. Patients with sleep disordered breathing are more likely to suffer from:

  • Stroke
  • Weight gain
  • Poor balance
  • Liver problems
  • High or increased blood pressure
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Problems with the immune, digestive or central nervous systems
  • Problems with hormone production
  • Heart disease or cardiovascular problems

The CDC has also recognized insufficient sleep resulting from sleep disorders a global public health epidemic. In addition to increasing your personal health concerns, lack of sleep has also been linked to car accidents, occupational accidents and lowered quality of life and productivity.

Your Treatment Options

The good news is that treatments for sleep disordered breathing exist! At our office, we are able to help patients address the oral contributions to sleep disorders. For patients who struggle with obstructive sleep apnea but find themselves CPAP intolerant, we can offer oral appliance therapy as a simple, convenient and comfortable alternative or addition to their CPAP machine. These appliances are designed to open the airway and keep it clear during sleep so our patients can achieve the rest they need and deserve. The recommended treatment and expected outcomes will vary from patient to patient depending on the different factors that contribute to their specific sleep disordered breathing.

As with all of our services, Dr. Kamila Husain keeps whole body wellness in mind, offering holistic solutions to our patients’ problems. One of the ways we do this is by helping our patients, both adults and children alike, naturally grow and strengthen their jaw muscle. By focusing on the body’s natural symmetry, we can help alleviate aches and pains in the jaw that may be contributing to sleep disordered breathing. We are also happy to offer laser treatment for snoring.

Call or visit our office today to learn more about sleep disordered breathing and how our team can help find the sleep you need. We are committed to helping you achieve great oral and overall health.
